: NATIONAL VOCATIONAL
QUALIFICATIONS (NVQs)
An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a qualification,
which assesses someone's competence (that skills, knowledge
and understanding they have) within their work situation.
NVQs are based on national occupational standards and
the standards describe the level and breadth of performance
that is expected from anyone who is working in the
industry or sector which NVQ covers.
To achieve an NVQ there must be proof that a person
has the skills, knowledge and understanding detailed
in the NVQ units of competence. As an assessor you
will judge, from evidence produced by the candidate,
whether they have demonstrated the skills, knowledge
and understanding to the necessary standard.
The nature of an NVQ means that most of the evidence
will be gathered through a candidate's own work for
by assessor observation.
